Young air cadets from 165Squadron have broken their previous records for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Based outside the B+Q supermarket, in four days of collecting the youngsters have already raised £3,400. By the end of Remembrance Day (November 11th) Flight Lieutenant James Martin is certain that they will have broken the £4,000 mark

Veterans and local uniformed youngsters joined forces today at St Cuthberts Church in Castle Vale, to lay wreaths and poppies in front of the memorial plaque to 605 Spitfire Squadron. Castle Vale, built on a former airfield and generally regarded as the home of the Spitfire, the key strategic weapon against the German Luftwaffe, was one of the most important air force bases before and during World War II.

Reverend James Cope, during the service inside the Church, read a poem written by Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy, a priest who was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in 1917. He was also known as ‘Woodbine Willy’ for his habit of handing out packets of Woodbine cigarettes to troops as he visited them in the trenches during World War I.

was a cadet in 165 squadron 1954/57 under Fl/Lt Barton, had a great time and flew in the old Avro Anson which came from RAF Hawden. Glad to see you are still going strong, best wishes
