Indian car giant Tata, the likely buyers of Jaguar from the Ford Company have unveiled their latest car, the Nano, a tiny and cheap four door car aimed at cash strapped families in India. The Nano is ten feet long, five feet wide, and has a top speed of 65 m.p.h. In India it will cost the equivalent of less than £1,300 and will be launched later this year. The name ‘Nano’ comes from the Latin word for a dwarf. More recently, it is defined as a billionth, or one in a billion.

Two weeks ago, Ford accepted Tata’s one billion pound bid for Jaguar and Land Rover, including the site at Castle Bromwich that currently employs 3,000 people.

Ratan N. Tata, Chairman of Tata Motors, said, “I observed families riding on two-wheelers – the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Today, we indeed have a People’s Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions.”
