End of the road for ‘Independents’ in Birmingham
Labour had a poor set of election results in Birmingham on May 1st, losing ground to the Conservatives, and falling to a level only slightly ahead of the Liberal Democrats. Labour lost 6 seats to the Conservatives. The Lib Dems stayed the same, -they have 32 of the 120 seats on the City Council. Conservatives are up from 43 to 49. Labour are down from 42 to 36. The other three seats belong to the Respect Party, who have gained one, from Independent. There are now no independent councillors on Birmingham Council.
Sallyann Rose, a Castle Vale resident who stood as an independent candidate for Tyburn ward, had a disappointing return last night, receiving just 129 votes, less than 3% of the votes cast. It has become increasingly difficult for independent councillors to attract votes in recent years, as they do not have the backing of a political party’s media and advertising machine. When Sallyann stood as a Conservative Candidate in 2007, she attracted 1020 votes, 23% of the total votes cast for the ward.
