Birmingham Trading Standards is warning members of the public and traders to be on the look-out for counterfeit vodka. West Midlands Police seized 120 bottles of Glens Vodka from Select & Save off-licence in Frankley Beeches Road, Northfield, after a member of the public was hospitalised after drinking a counterfeit version. These were passed to Trading Standards officers and 10 of them were found to be counterfeit.
There have been occasional previous warnings about counterfeit Glens Vodka across the country. It is not known where the fake goods come from but they could contain excess quantities of methanol and therefore be dangerous.
Members of the public or traders who think they have bought counterfeit Glens Vodka should contact Trading Standards on 0121 303 6031. Genuine bottles will have an ACG logo on the base of the bottle and embossed information 5mm above the base: “70cl 58mm C12173”. If the bottle does not contain this information, it is counterfeit.
