85 year-old Vale veteran Harry Hill served in the 9th Lancers in Italy and the Middle East during 1944. Today, he’s still on duty, collecting money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in Sainsbury’s in Castle Vale. He is pictured above with three generations of the Mayes family, from Water Orton, the youngest of whom, aged six weeks, is snuggled up very closely to her Mom, the most senior being  the baby’s grandfather, Reverend Stephen Mayes, Vicar of St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Water Orton.

Remembrance Day this year falls on a Sunday, with two minutes’ silence being observed at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month, the exact time that the guns fell silent to end World War I in 1918. click live text for details of St Cuthbert’s Remembrance Day Service)
