1.9% proposed increase in council tax

Council leader Mike Whitby has today proposed a 1.9% increase in council tax for Birmingham residents for 2010/11. The full Council meets on 23rd February  to decide whether to approve the figure. If they do so,  it will be the fifth year running that a 1.9 per cent increase has been set.
Labour councillors are likely to suggest that a below inflation increase will mean further cuts in an already cash strapped City. But with elections looming, no political party will want to appear to be in favour of large tax rises.
