List of general election candidates out on Tuesday

Erdington voters should know on Tuesday this week the full list of candidates they will be able to vote for at the 6th May General Election. Nominations close at 4pm on Tuesday 20th April; the full list of candidates is published at 5pm. The three main parties will be joined by candidates from UKIP and the BNP, and also by an independent candidate, Tony Tomkins, who stood as a Conservative candidate at the 1997 general election. He polled over 11,000 votes but was defeated by Robin Corbett, the Labour MP who has since joined the House of Lords.
The turnout of voters during recent general Elections has declined.
In 1992 the Erdington turnout was 70%. In 1997 it dropped to 61%. In 2001 it was down to 47%, and at the last election (2005) it was 49%.
The current MP, Sion Simon, is standing down. Erdington is regarded as a safe Labour seat. Sion Simon’s majority at the 2005 General Election was 9,575.
