INDUSTRIAL ACTION AND SEVERE WEATHER have caused a backlog in Birmingham rubbish collections. Households relying on Monday collections have suffered most, admits the Council, who say a team of 100 casual workers drafted in for the holiday period will be trying to catch up with collections by working on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.
Relations between the binmen and the Council deteriorated this week after two refuse collectors were suspended, prompting a walkout by colleagues.
Tommy Wallace, Director of Fleet and Waste Management for Birmingham City Council, said “Contrary to some reports, it is not true that residents may go up to a month without a collection.”
Rubbish bags are piling up outside many Castle Vale homes. The Christmas period is expected to generate an extra 30% of rubbish.

Around here, rubbish collection is on Friday, and it has been two weeks since any was collected. It was the same last Christmas though, when we went three weeks before it was collected. Some people in my road have taken their rubbish to the tip, as rats have been seen, no doubt attracted by the rubbish.
