The Council has agreed to increase the number of car parking bays for an organisation called City Car Club who hire out cars by the hour. Car users can phone the organisation, book a car from one of the car parking bays, key in their code number, drive off and return it to the bay. The car club scheme is seen as an alternative to daily car hire, and aims to reduce car ownership and congestion in city centres. It has centres in 14 UK cities and has been operating on a small scale in Birmingham since 2008; now the plan is to increase the number of parking bays and thereby increase the appeal of the scheme. Currently there are two car club locations in the City, at Brindley Place and Clive Passage; two more are planned, for Aston University Business Park and Warstone Lane in the Jewellery Quarter.
