New Year pyrotechnics display in Victoria Square

A pyrotechnic display by Dragonfire Fireworks in Victoria Square will bring in 2012 with a bang, says the City Council. The display at midnight will feature low level pyrotechnics in the Square. The big television screen in the Square will show the BBC One New Year Celebrations between 10pm and 12.30am.


Public urged to comment on Brum’s £65 million cuts

The public have two weeks left to comment on the City Council’s proposals to make cuts of £65 million for 2012/13 from its annual budget of £3.5 billion.
Consultation closes on 8th January.

Man, 65, charged with murder of Erdington woman

A 65 year-old man has appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with the murder of Gillian Rennie, the 58 year-old woman who was found stabbed to death in a house on Croydon Road, Erdington on Thursday.
He was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance.

Woman found stabbed to death in Erdington

Police have launched a murder investigation after discovering a 58 year-old woman’s body at a home in Croydon Road, Erdington, yesterday. She died of multiple stab wounds.
A 65 year-old man was detained by police in Birmingham city centre in connection with the woman’s death and he remains in police custody today.
Detective Inspector Stuart Kidd said: “Our initial inquiries lead us to believe that this was a domestic related incident, in which a woman has tragically lost her life.”

The temperature in Birmingham will be around 11 degrees centigrade on Chritstmas Day in the West Midlands, says the Met Office. William Hill Bookmakers say the odds on a white Birmingham Christmas (snow falling in the Bull Ring Centre) are 16-1.

Happy birthday, Lord Corbett of Castle Vale

Lord Corbett of Castle Vale is 78 today. A former journalist with the Birmingham Mail and the Daily Mirror, Robin Corbett served as a Labour MP for Erdington for 18 years between 1983 and 2001. Before that, he had been MP for Hemel Hempstead.
When he entered the House of Lords in 2001, he chose to be known by the name of the estate for which he has worked hard during and beyond its years of regeneration.
Lord Corbett is chair of Castle Vale Neighbourhood Partnership Board.
