Lord Corbett of Castle Vale: 1933-2012

Robin Corbett, Lord Corbett of Castle Vale

Lord Corbett of Castle Vale has died today, aged 78.
He had been suffering with cancer for some months.
A former journalist with the Birmingham Mail and the Daily Mirror, Robin Corbett served as a Labour MP for Erdington for 18 years between 1983 and 2001.
He was opposition spokesman on Home Affairs for 12 years, then for national heritage, broadcasting and press until 1995. He served as a Labour Party Whip from 1984 until 1987.
He was Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee from 1999 to 2001. When he entered the House of Lords in 2001, he chose to be known as Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, after the estate for which he had worked hard during and beyond its years of regeneration.
The considerable skills of diplomacy learned on the national and international scene he exercised to great effect at a local level in his role as Chair of Castle Vale Neighbourhood Partnership Board.
His skill, influence, fairness, patience, charm and sense of humour will be sorely missed.

We send our condolences to his family. We are thankful for all Robin’s support and input over the years and we as an estate owe him much for all his efforts on our behalf. When he was our M.P. we had many times to write to him and we always had a reply and I, David enjoyed my time on the Partnership Board under his chairmanship. We say a fond farewell to a good friend of CV.
