SATs: Year 6 primary pupils prepare for maths and English tests

Year 6 pupils in all primary schools will be preparing for their SATs tests next week (14th-16th May).
Pupils will sit a reading test and maths tests that are externally examined. This year, the pupils’ writing tests will be marked by their teachers.
The decision to allow teachers to mark and grade their own pupils’ writing is a climbdown by the government’s Department for Education following a campaign of opposition to the testing regime by teachers.
Many teachers object that the results are used to compose a league table in which schools across the country can be compared with each other.
But the disagreements could be rekindled if the DfE goes ahead with its proposals to introduce an externally assessed spelling, punctuation and grammar test for 2013.
