Chivenor teachers in union strike ballot

Teachers from Chivenor School in Castle Vale and Erdington Hall School in Tyburn are amongst those being balloted with a view to strike action by teachers’ unions. The NUT (National Union of Teachers) is holding the ballot because they feel that primary schools are being forced into a corner on the issue of academy status. In the case of Chivenor and Erdington Hall, both sets of governors agreed to the academy status bid, but large numbers of teachers within the schools are unhappy with the governors’ decisions.
Thirteen Birmingham primary schools are being balloted. The two main teaching unions, the NUT and NAS/UWT are planning to take joint action on this issue.
Chivenor and Erdington Hall have the lowest scores in English and maths of all of Tyburn’s ten primary schools, according to this year’s league tables. Both fell below the Government’s minimum acceptable standard in English and maths scores.
